Effectiveness and harmfulness evaluation of graffiti cleaning by mechanical, chemical and laser procedures on granite by J. This paper reports the results from the comparative evaluation of the global cleaning effectiveness of four graffiti colours red, blue, black and silver applied on two granites with different textures and compositions. A conventional mechanical method and several chemical products were evaluated. Additionally, it was evaluated the cleaning based on laser ablation by means of a nanosecond pulsed Nd: YVO4 at a wavelength of nm.
Optical and electronic microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy and spectrophotometry were applied in order to assess the cleaning effectiveness and also the harmful effects on the stones. Taking into account the graffiti extraction degree, it was found that blue, red and black colours were successfully extracted by all the evaluated methods. However, the extraction of silver colour, whose chemical composition differs from that of the other three colours, was more difficult and it was only achieved by the mechanical procedure and by several chemical products; Nd: YVO4 laser at nm was an ineffective procedure in removing this paint.

The course begins with hands-on instruction on applying plaster. Using a prototype you draw and paint the cartoon, transfer it to the plaster and begin painting the image.
FTIR spectroscopy measures the residual IR radiation emitted by the sample after an IR beam has been transmitted through or refl ected off it. The diff erence between the incident and the emitted energies is relative to the absorption capacity of the molecules the sample is composed of. In order to interpret a FTIR spectrum it is either compared to known spectra found in spectral libraries or each peak is attributed separately.

This is Chapter 5. Since September, I have been a visiting scholar and guest of the history department at the University of Padova. Founded in , it is one of the oldest universities in Europe, in a city with a rich history dating back to the Roman republic for reference, the University of Nevada, Reno was founded in , while Harvard was founded in Living in Padova has offered stark differences from my normal routines in Reno, while working here has presented abundant new academic opportunities.
Padova itself is surrounded by a double set of medieval walls and is crossed by a series of canals, effectively making the center of town an island one which is for the most part car-free. On my daily walk to my office everyone either walks or bikes , I first pass a medieval tower that was turned into an astronomical observatory, “La Specola”, in the 18th century but commonly known as the “torre di Galileo” after the famous scholar who taught at the university at the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century.
La Specola, the canal, and porticoed sidewalks in Padova. I cross one of the major canals and move mostly under the porticos of fifteenth and sixteenth century buildings that hang over the majority of the narrow sidewalks. I pass building which have reused architectural fragments from the Roman city lying beneath the streets, and churches with amazing fourteenth century frescos.
The city is littered with small bars, pastry shops, and cafes where the throngs of students are repowered, so access to coffee is too easy. For meals, almost every day the two main piazzas are transformed into markets where fresh fruits and vegetables are sold, and in the street level of the Palazzo della Ragione the “Palace of Reason” that served as the medieval city hall , stalls sell meats, cheeses and other local specialties.
While the city is fascinating, I spend the majority of my time in my office in the history department did I mention that it is in a late medieval Palazzo?

We do this using a combination of powerful algorithms and human stylists. You’d be joining a small, highly technical team with a ton of startup experience the founders have started and sold 2 companies before. You’ll be one of the first technical hires and get to build and own huge parts of the product and work on the core algorithms. One of our ancillary goals is to build one of the best engineering cultures anywhere, and we’d love you to help us do that.
Florence originated as a Roman city, and later, after a long period as a flourishing trading and banking medieval commune, it was the birthplace of the Italian ing to the Encyclopædia Britannica, it was politically, economically, and culturally one of the most important cities in Europe and the world from the 14th to 16th centuries.
In such situations micropalaeontology is an effective method by which pottery fabrics containing microfossils can be matched to raw materials sources in what would otherwise be an unpromising geological terrain. Burrough Hill hill-fort, east Leicestershire, United Kingdom, is an example of an Iron Age settlement set in a sedimentary landscape.
It is a large hill-fort of the Corieltauvi people who occupied the East Midlands in the millennium prior to the Roman occupation of Britain in AD Excavations at the site are yielding new information about the nature of life in lowland Iron Age Britain. Objectives of the current study are to determine microfossil signatures of the local sedimentary deposits, investigate the microfossil signatures of building materials and pottery, provide a baseline dataset for assessing the sources of clays for pottery production, determine the source materials for pottery production, and investigate what this tells us about late Iron Age to Roman occupation at the site.
To this end samples were taken of scored ware, calcite-gritted ware and mixed-gritted ware from the site dating from mid- to late Iron Age through the transition into the Romano-British period. The pottery fabrics show evidence of an overall continuity in production from the Mid- to Late Iron Age into the Romano-British period. Shell and quartz rich fabrics are present in each phase of occupation.

Students will analyze and interpet their own samples and data, in the context of their own research projects. Through both hands-on analyses and interpretations, as well as informal lectures and discussions, students will learn fundamentals of radioisotopic dating, laboratory techniques, analytical instrumentation, basics of thermochronologic modeling, the geology of Antarctica, and each others’ research projects.
Ideally, a student’s accomplishments at this workshop should complement a larger research project supervised by the student’s faculty advisor at his or her home institution.
Dating from the 16th century, the Haraqija Inn (Haraçia Inn) is one of the oldest objects in Gjakova, which history is linked with the origin of the city. Being used by many different passing caravans, the inn is situated in the southern part of the Bazaar.
The topic of the conference was Fransiscans in Medieval Scandinavia. To maximaze the information the dating of the mortar was done parallel to dendrochronology of all the wood available in the churches. Members of the team: Stephanie Maloney and John R. Hale were included in the team, both from the University of Louisville, KY.
This conference opened for valuable collaboration with Mark Van Strydonck, one of the real pioneers in mortar-dating from the Kikirpa, in Brussels. She suggested that we should test mortar dating in Rome. Thus, some of our earlier results of Pozzolana mortars from Rome were re-analysed. All of this meant that we were gradually set for testing our results with proper inter-comparison between different laboratories and different types of mortars and pozzolanas.
Sampling at Herculaneum and Pompeii was tested in The result from all laboratories involved was that mortars, or pozzolanas that have been buried in volcanic eruptions are not suitable for 14C-analysis. Gotland is the biggest island in the Baltic Sea, with an incredibly rich history.
