The prospect of a truly national rugby league competition in addition to the introduction of pay television in Australia attracted the attention of global media organisation, News Corporation , and it followed that professional rugby league was shaken to its very foundations in the mid s with the advent of the Super League war. Initially a conflict over broadcasting rights, it became a dispute as to who controlled the sport and which traditional clubs would survive into the new national era, as News Limited formed their own Super League and admitted some former ARL clubs, poaching players from the original ARL league with high salaries. With twenty-two teams of highly varying quality playing in two competitions that year, crowd attendances and corporate sponsorships were spread very thinly, and many teams found themselves in financial difficulty. The ARL undertook moves to invite the traditional clubs that had moved to the Super League competition back into a re-unified competition. Is school sport worth the risk? There is space on the field for individual brilliance, but most of what happens depends on the co-operation of 15 players, not the flair of one. The toughness of the game is itself a virtue. Young men – and perhaps more young women than current attitudes acknowledge – need to test themselves physically, to push themselves to their boundaries. If they don’t have the chance to play rugby, they may well try even more dangerous pursuits.
There are laws that the referee enforces, but there are also unwritten and usually unspoken rules of conduct that players themselves observe. One does not gouge, one does not bite, one does not attack the vulnerable bits of opponents’ bodies – or, rather, if one does offend, one is dealt with sharply enough by one’s own team-mates, if not the opposition. To learn the necessary restraint – even if that learning is largely unconscious – is a crucial part of the educational value of rugby.
Of course, one needs to be aware of the need for safety, even though one does sometimes wonder whether restrictions in the name of safety won’t end up as restrictions on freedom. Is it really a good idea to stop youngsters taking all the risks moral as well as physical that we took ourselves when we were young, and through which – in surviving them – we grew up? Nevertheless, coaches and referees have to be trained not to allow players to take unnecessary risks, and persistently dangerous players must be dealt with, not just with immediate punishment in the way of red or yellow cards, but with post-match explanation.
